Resources for Abortion Delivery (RAD) protects abortion access by investing charitable resources in the U.S. independent abortion sector.
Independent abortion providers (providers not affiliated with Planned Parenthood) perform the majority of this country’s abortions and are the only providers in some states. These same providers face a web of challenges that include increasing legal restrictions, rising costs, and service-model disruptions associated with increased telemedicine, and shifting patient volumes. The likelihood that the Supreme Court will soon slash legal protections for abortion presents an additional and unprecedented challenge to the sector. Charitable support for the independent sector has historically been scarce, with increasingly negative consequences for patient access and care: the number of independent facilities in the U.S. has dropped 32% since 2012.
RAD disrupts these negative trends by providing funds and technical assistance to support the accessibility, quality, and sustainability of independent abortion providers. Established in 2016 as a fiscally-sponsored project of Hopewell Fund, RAD has disbursed millions of dollars in charitable funds, and assisted nearly 200 existing and prospective abortion facilities, across nearly all U.S. states. We are unique in our knowledge of independent abortion providers, in our ability to pool and distribute donor funds, and in our capacity to give charitable dollars to support both tax-exempt and privately owned, taxable abortion facilities.
RAD's work is supported by individuals, donor-advised funds, and more than a dozen charitable foundations.
